I love this article. I think it addresses a critical issue in every young theatre-person's career. We are all told theatre is not a money making field, but does this narrow what we think we can achieve? The article says it all perfectly. I know that we hinder ourselves if we do not believe that we can do anything.
This is so true! And I am willing to admit that I have always thought the same, and just learned to accept it. It is true that you can make whatever you want with hardly any budget. When we were doing Vagina Play we started off with no budget and were managing to get everything we needed either off of craigslist or other creative outlets. We did eventually get a budget of about $500, but only spend about 150 dollars of that. I mean it wasn't the most over the top production but it was not lacking in bells and whistles either. I think sometimes a budget puts pressure on us as creative people. Which can be detrimental. I think as creative people we should try at least one project where the pressure of money is taken out of the picture. I think once we feel comfortable not needing money to make something successful we will not need money to feel successful.
ReplyDeleteThat's the culture we live in. Money is man's God now, and I think there is such a lack of authenticity in a lot of things. People nowadays don't do something just for the hell of it. They do it as a means to an end. The end being: MONEY. It's sad that people can't just enjoy being in the moment and not worrying about how much money they're going to make. I've been told a lot of times that there's no money in theater, but I still pursue it. Why? Because I love it, and I am totally willing to get another job to make ends meet, as long as I can do something I love.
ReplyDeleteYES! truthfully it is a scary thought to know that it is going to take more for us to be financially stable (especially in this economy), but if we are doing something that makes us happy, why not? It would be so cool to get a group of people together and just make something for fun, and not worry about money. What kind of project could we do that would make people stop worrying about money and just enjoy life? I think it would be great to try and make something and just bring the public's attention to appreciating art. You down Tsyeba?
